Precision Devices introduce new Spread Spectrum Clock Oscillators

Spread spectrum enables efficient and economic reduction of EMI

Now available, Precision Devices has announced the introduction of two new spread spectrum clock oscillators, the SSOC5 and SSOC7. The new SSOC5 and SSOC7 provide an efficient and economic method of reducing system EMI at its source, the clock oscillator. The modulated output frequency of the SSOC5 and SSOC7 enables EMI to be reduced by up to 15dBc relative to fixed crystal oscillators. The SSOC5 and SSOC7 operate with a 3.3V supply voltage and the CMOS clock generator produces a square-wave fixed output frequency range from 6.00MHz to 160.00MHz and 3.6MHz to 220.00MHz respectively.

A spread spectrum crystal clock oscillator is an oscillator that has the output frequency modulated in order to reduce EMI on the output signal. Frequency sources such as quartz crystal oscillators, phase lock loop (PLL) synthesisers and other types of clock signal generation are a major source of EMI in electronic circuits. The use of a spread spectrum clock oscillator at the design and development stage will negate the need for expensive EMI reduction techniques such as filtering components, shielding enclosures and multiple ground and power planes. The advantages of using low EMI spread spectrum oscillators are simplified regulatory testing, shorter time-to-market and reduced system costs.

Precision Devices specifies a load termination of 15pF maximum with rise and fall times of 4.0ns maximum (10% to 90% of the waveform). The new SSCO5 and SSCO7 offer a ±25ppm, ±50ppm and ±100ppm frequency stability option over an operating temperature range of 0°C to +70°C with a -40°C to +85°C option available.

The SSOC5 is available in a 4-pin SMD package with dimensions of 5.0mm (l) x 3.2mm (w) x 1.2mm (h) and the SSOC7 is available in a 4-pin SMD package with dimensions of 7.0mm (l) x 5.0mm (w) x 1.8mm (h). Typical applications include office equipment, computer systems, telecommunications, set top boxes and embedded systems.

High Frequency Inverted Mesa Filters

PDI's new Inverted Mesa IM series 5700 series high frequency, 2-pole crystal filters were designed for rugged environments, especially for military and avionics applications. With a frequency range from 60 to 250 MHz (fundamental), it's ideal for HF radio applications using DSP technology. Its small size replaces the current thru-hole, 2-pole filter used as roofing devices. Extreme temperature applications are ideal for our new miniature clock  oscillator!

On January 26th, 2010, Precision Devices Inc. will announce the introduction of our new OC8037 miniature clock oscillator which is targeted at extreme temperature and harsh environment applications. Extreme conditions are well supported by this new oscillator which provides an extensive range of operating temperatures including -40°C to +85°C, -55°C to +225°C and additional options to support even higher operating temperatures. Aiding the clock oscillators suitability for harsh environments, the OC8037 also offers a high shock resistance of 5000g (at 0.3ms, ½ sine) and a high vibration resistance of 10Hz to 2000Hz at 10g.

The oscillator offers an operating frequency range of up to 160MHz with a square wave HC-CMOS/AC-CMOS output, a frequency stability of +/-50ppm output and two supply voltage options: 3.3V and 5V.

With a wide range of potential applications which includes some very niche industries such as downhole well boring and abyssal geological survey equipment, this should be a welcomed device for challenging applications in which the ability to perform in extreme temperature environments is a ‘must have’!

Typical applications for the new oscillator include avionics and aerospace systems such as airborne computers, cockpit instrumentation and displays, automotive systems and medical equipment. The new miniature clock oscillator is available in a RoHS compliant 4-pin SMD ceramic package with compact dimensions of 8.0mm (l) x 3.7mm (w) x 2.0mm (d)

The new Precision Devices OC8037 oscillator can be supplied in 1,000 units on tape and reel. Please call us for a detailed spec, as we will be pleased to provide prototype samples for new designs.
